SEISMIC

This unit’s function is to monitor, record local earthquakes, keep log and report significant earthquake events daily. Volcanologists, geologists, and other interested scientists have been furnished with such data. The staffs are responsible for the maintenance and repair of all instruments being used. They received their training on volcanology, seismology, ground deformation, and geo-chemistry at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) and the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV) at the University of Hawaii, in Hilo.

The monitoring network comprises of six stations one in Saipan and five stations on four islands north of Saipan. The signal is telemetered from AGRI and PAGV to PAGN then both signals is repeated with PAGN to ALMG, to ANAT, and to EMO Saipan central station. The following are the stations and their locations: (1) SAPN (EMO Saipan) 15.12Nlat. 145.45E long. (2) ANAT(Anatahan) 16.3N lat. 145.6E long. (3) ALMG(Alamagan) 17.6N lat. 145.6E long. 4. PAGN(Pagan-south) 18.1N lat. 145.7E long. 5. PAGV(Pagan-north) 18.1N lat. 145.7E long. 6. AGRI (Agrihan) 18.7N lat. 145.7E long.
